> Lifesavers

Medic, Community Group partner for Life Savers Campaign Medic Regional Blood Center and the Community Coalition on Family Violence are Working Together to Save Lives through educating the public about the needs to donate blood and to stop abuse in families. The Life Saver campaign begins December 23 with a request that those who already have donated for their annual Medic membership dedicate at least one more donation each year for victims of family violence. Donors must tell a Medic staff member during pre-donation screening that they are making a replacement donation for the CCFV account.
The donations will be banked so that local victims of domestic violence who must have blood transfusions will not have to pay the full blood supplier processing fee. Through January, each Knoxville area donor will receive a coupon from Krispy Kreme for an offer to buy a dozen doughnuts and receive another dozen for 99 cents.

According to Jo Terry, executive director of the Community Coalition, family violence is a serious health and cultural issue in our community . There are over 18,500 calls made locally to 911 each year. that are domestic related. Sometimes this violence is life threatening and the need for blood is critical. CCFV is pleased to partner with Medic to help bring this issue to public attention. Blood donors who designate their donation for victims of domestic violence truly will provide a life-saving service.
Anyone wishing to donate blood for victims of family violence may give at Medic Headquarters, 1601 Ailor Ave. (intersection of 17th Street and Western Avenue.) Donor Center hours are 8 am to 6:30 pm Monday through Friday ; Saturday  8 am to 11:30 am and Sunday  1 pm to 4:30 pm. Donations also may be made at other Knoxville area blood drives. Donors of all types are needed, but there is a special need for, O negative blood types.
Donors will receive a special edition Life Saver t-shirt and a cholesterol level evaluation (no fasting required). Donors must have positive identification, must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no upper age limit for donating.
Individual donations may be used for the donor's and/or the donor's family's own Medic coverage , as a replacement or as a substitution for someone else's coverage. Family coverage means that one donation a year to Medic exempts the donor and his/her IRS dependents from paying blood supplier processing fees at any U.S. hospital if transfusion is needed. New individual members are covered except for pre-existing conditions.
